The Lincoln Group of New York, an organization dedicated to studying the life and times of Abraham Lincoln, has conferred its 2001 Award of Achievement upon author Dr. Edward Steers for his book Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, published by The University Press of Kentucky 2001.

The award is presented annually to the individual or organization in America that has done the most to encourage the study and appreciation of Abraham Lincoln and the times in which he lived.  By winning the award, an oval plaster bas-relief Lincoln portrait surrounded by a cluster of oak leaves and inscribed with words from the Gettysburg Address, Dr. Steers joins a distinguished group of past recipients including Pulitzer Prize winners David Herbert Donald, Gary Wills, and Harold Holzer.

In making this award, The Lincoln Group of New York recognizes that Blood on the Moon is a monumental achievement, one that qualifies as the most significant addition to the literature on Lincoln’s assassination ever written, thereby making it the standard by which all other works of its kind will be judged. Based on numerous primary sources of evidence, Steers provides compelling evidence to overturn the widely held assumption that Dr. Samuel Mudd was simply the victim of a vengeful government out to convict him for providing medical treatment to Booth after the assassination.  Steers also documents why the military trial of the conspirators, considered by many illegal and lacking jurisdiction, was accurately and legally conducted.

THE 1999 WINNER OF THE LINCOLN GROUP OF NEW YORK
AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT

1863: THE REBIRTH OF A NATION,

AUTHOR
JOSEPH E. STEVENS
PUBLISHER
BANTAM BOOKS, A DIVISION OF RANDOM HOUSE 1999

The Lincoln Group of New York, an organization dedicated to studying the life and times of Abraham Lincoln, has conferred its 1999 Award of Achievement upon Joseph E. Stevens for his book, 1863: The Rebirth of a Nation, published by Bantam Books, a division of Random House. The award is presented annually to the individual or organization that has done the most to encourage the study and appreciation of Abraham Lincoln, and the times in which he lived. By winning the award, an oval plaster bas-relief Lincoln portrait surrounded by a cluster of oak leaves and inscribed with words from the "Gettysburg Address," Mr. Stevens joins a distinguished group of past recipients including David Herbert Donald, Douglas Wilson, and Harold Holzer. In making this award, the Lincoln Group of New York recognized Stevens' work as the first narrative nonfiction study concentrating solely on the pivotal year of the Civil War, and perhaps in our nation's history. From Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on the first day of the year, to the epic Battle of Gettysburg and Siege of Vicksburg, to the completion of the Capital Building's dome in December, Stevens makes the reader feel like a participant in the events of 1863. Politics, the war, and Lincoln are all covered in Stevens' skillfully written study.
